Walnut Way Conservation Corp. has been named a finalist in the “Communities Take Root” competition. People across the U.S. can vote for local organizations at www.communitiestakeroot.com. The organizations with the most votes will be awarded fruit orchards provided by Edy’s Fruit Bars brand and the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation.
Walnut Way’s vegetable gardens, rain gardens, fruit orchards and apiaries in Lindsay Heights were once vacant lots filled with litter and gathering places for unlawful activity. Now, the gardens help youth and adults develop work skills, educate people about protecting the environment, and provide fruits and vegetables for the community. If Walnut Way wins the contest, it would expand its urban agriculture program.
Anyone in Wisconsin can vote online once every day until May 31.
