Until now, city regulations prohibited night parking on the streets from Dec. 1 through March 1. As a result, residents often had to park their vehicles blocks from their homes in bad weather. 12th District Ald. Jim Witkowiak and 14th District Ald. Tony Zielinski agreed to change the overnight parking rules before the new winter season begins.
“We are tired of risking the safety of our children and young people, our elderly and our handicapped,” said Marina Borges, a community leader and volunteer with the Southside Organizing Committee (SOC), which organized a recent community meeting on the issue.
“We are tired of leaving our assets unprotected, vulnerable to vandalism and theft, and we are tired of being pitted against our neighbors on surrounding blocks,” she added.
More than 80 Near South Side residents gathered at Kosciuszko Community Center for the meeting, billed as “Winter Parking for Working Families.”
“This is a great victory for the hard-working people of the Near South Side,” Borges said.Did you like this story? Give Today
