Teachers all over are scrambling to find new and innovative instructional strategies to improve student academic attainment and close the ever-widening achievement gap. Yet, the answers may lie in returning to two very basic ideas; “Reading, (W)riting, and (A)rithmetic” and the adage that it “Takes a village to raise a child”. It is not enough for teachers to provide subject area instruction alone, but they must show the real life application and links to all of those skills with writing as central to demonstrating that knowledge. Moreover, collaboration with teachers is not enough to maximize student success. However, saying that, one cannot overlook the fact that oftentimes the “how” to effectively communicate between teacher and parent is not a given.
Through Rebirth Ink LLC, an educational consulting firm, founder and director, Linetta Davis seeks to share effective approaches to aid teachers and students in establishing a positive environment that is most conducive to learning. She shares techniques created over the years that strengthened communication between parent and teacher which subsequently supported the development and full implementation of her own writing curriculum which helped her students to reach a higher level of success than those absent her instruction.
There is another saying that experience is the best teacher. With that being said, there is little doubt that writing is “her thing.” She is an author of two published works, A Black Woman’s Burden: Her Journey from Pain to Freedom (2010) and Honey and Vinegar (2010). She is also a popular performing artist and motivational speaker in the Milwaukee area and has been a certified teacher for over 11 years. She has succeeded in combining all of her talents to create and implement effective instructional strategies that enhance the educational experience for all stakeholders.
The creation of Rebirth Ink came about as a result of her dissatisfaction with the failure that continues to be evident in urban and low SES school districts. If educators truly fashion themselves as the ones who pave the road to college for their students, they must then prepare them for college and for life by teaching them how to effectively communicate through writing. And yet, despite their passion they must recognize and learn to effectively work with parents and students to make sure that the children have the tools needed to remain on that “road to success”. Rebirth Ink LLC offers two professional development trainings to meet these goals; The Write Way Format: A K-12 Writing Approach and The Parent-Teacher-Student Triangle. In addition to the in-service opportunities, Rebirth Ink LLC also offers a writing workshop, Rewriting the Poet in You, geared toward assisting advanced writers in the development of their own personal style.
While Rebirth Ink LLC is newly established, it has been in development within the mind of the creator and active in her classroom for the past 10 years.
