330,000 people in eastern Wisconsin struggle with hunger every day. During the month of September everyone can be a part of the solution. This September, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin encourages the community to raise awareness about hunger during Hunger Action Month.
Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin provides a calendar with 30 ways in 30 days to make a difference during September. Opportunities to raise awareness include: a national “Go Orange” day on September 5, a day to wear the color orange; a run/walk on September 21 to help raise money for hunger relief; and a social media effort to advocate for the hungry.
In an effort to bring additional awareness to the issue of hunger, buildings and landmarks in and around Milwaukee will light up orange, with the help of our lighting partner Majic Enterprises, the week of September 15 including Colectivo Coffee on the Lake, the Marquette Interchange, Marquette University, the Milwaukee Domes, Miller Park and the US Bank building.
“Hunger is a serious issue in Wisconsin. 105,000 children in eastern Wisconsin go to bed hungry because there isn’t enough money for food,” said Bonnie Bellehumeur, president of Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, “The good news is, everyone can do their part to help bring awareness to this issue, whether it’s donating to the food bank, volunteering your time or advocating on behalf of Feeding America. Every little bit helps shine a light on the issue of hunger in our area.”
Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin provides food to families, children and seniors struggling with hunger throughout the year. Last year, we distributed more than 20 million pounds of food to people in need through our partner programs including, food pantries, meal programs, soup kitchens and shelters.
It’s because of the steadfast support of the community that we’re able to fulfill our mission of feeding the hungry throughout eastern Wisconsin. To find out how you can make a difference, visit www.feedingamericawi.org/HAM2013. Take action today; lend your voice to speak out against hunger.
