However, there is one thing I’m not looking forward to this year, seeing my friends tempted into using new tobacco products that are flavored and packaged like candy. It’s harder than ever before to stay tobacco-free with so many cheap tobacco products that feature flavors like Strawberry, Grape, and Berry Blast. There is no doubt that these flavors and flashy packages are aimed toward kids and teens like me.
It’s amazing to me how every time I go to a corner store in my community, there seems to be another tobacco product in a new flavor and package made to resemble candy or mints. The makers of these products say smokeless tobacco products are an alternative for adults who do not want to smoke or spit. If this is the case, why make them in flavors that resemble candy and packaging that is appealing to youth younger than age six.
Parents and teachers should know that these products exist and other teens should know that despite how fun and harmless they might look, they aren’t a safe alternative to traditional tobacco products!
Tobacco in any form – whether it’s flavored or unflavored, smoked or chewed – is not safe and can lead to a lifetime addiction.
