Lewis Lee, a former Milwaukee Fatherhood Initiative employee, said he is beginning to question city leadership and whether the will exists to change conditions in Milwaukee. He said elected officials should have a closer connection to the community, but noted that it is the responsibility of neighbors to create the safe communities they want.
Jose Hernandez says
Well said Mr. Lewis.
It is easy to rule and reign from on high, but to dwell among the people , interact and truly be in tune with the community you serve you must spend time learning and building relationships among that same community.
Roy B. Evans says
We forget that elected officials are not community leaders. Leaders are “selected” not “elected”. Elected officials have defined geographic constituencies and have to bargain away their own for the sake of getting along with others. Preachers are not leaders because they have denominations and strict religious guidelines that they often refuse to expose when their religious principles are tested. Milwaukee’s black community has no identifiable leadership or power brokers therefore nothing of substance gets done on behalf of the black community. We have plenty of self proclaimed “leaders” but leadership is when leaders come together to deal with causes bigger than themselves. Roy B. Evans, Esq.
