United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee (UNCOM)

United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee (UNCOM) is Milwaukee’s preeminent collaborative partnership supporting healthy, wholesome and empowered Milwaukee neighborhoods.

Its mission is to strengthen city neighborhoods by combining and enhancing the assets of partner agencies to improve the quality of life for urban families.

UNCOM agencies include: Agape Community Center, COA Youth & Family Centers, Journey House, Milwaukee Christian Center, Neighborhood House of Milwaukee, Next Door Foundation, Northcott Neighborhood House and Silver Spring Neighborhood Center.

Projects include violence-prevention programs, citywide nutrition and physical activity programs, a year-round innovative youth employment program, cultural and visual arts programs, and the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service. For more information, visit UNCOM’s website.


The news service is also supported by the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication, Marquette University. The Diederichs gave Marquette $28 million in May 2005 to benefit the College of Communication, with the funds designated to establish endowments for scholarships, professorships, research, guest speakers and renovation of Johnston Hall, including creation of state-of-the-art audio and video broadcast studios, the addition of “smart” classrooms with Web technology, and Wi-Fi Internet connectivity throughout the building.The college is celebrating its Journalism Centennial during the 2010-11 academic year.
