The 53rd Street Community Garden, located in Sherman Park, has brought together a diverse mix of people that otherwise would not have met. The space not only is a place for the community to grow vegetables, but also provides a safe environment for people to meet and learn about the land.
Ten years ago the old railway corridor that splits the Riverwest and Harambee neighborhoods was in disrepair. The trail that the train tracks ran along was a hub for illegal dumping, crime and drug use. Today – after extensive rehabilitation – the trail has been transformed into a tree-lined community space.
Harriet Dorsey, the oldest resident of Walnut Way, celebrated her 106th birthday this week. State representative Elizabeth Coggs (10th District) joined the party, held at the Clinton Rose Senior Center, 3045 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Dr. In 2006, when Dorsey was 100, she was inducted in the Milwaukee County Senior Hall of Fame, receiving a special “Century of Service Award.” The long-time community volunteer has been called “the Queen Mother of the African American community.”
