During their first week of commuting after the elimination of Route 18, some South Siders interviewed by Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service along National Avenue were upset by the changes. Others said the bus lines that replaced Route 18 make their commute faster.
Manni Marquez, director of the Clarke Square Neighborhood Initiative (CSNI), was recently selected as the 2011 “Mi Comunidad” award winner. The award recognizes an unsung hero in Milwaukee’s Hispanic community each year. Marquez has been active in the Clarke Square neighborhood for more than 15 years.
A large crowd of families filled the auditorium at the Mexican Fiesta office at 2997 S. 20th St. recently to celebrate El Dia De Reyes, The Day of the Three Kings. The event marks the day Catholics believe the Three Wise Men followed a star to Bethlehem bearing gifts for baby Jesus. It included gifts for children, re-enactment of the Nativity, a performance by Ballet Folklorico and Mexican treats.
Neighborhood children were treated to a tasty breakfast and an early visit from Santa Claus at the Journey House Breakfast with Santa. The event took place a week before Christmas at Journey House Youth Center, 2212 W. Greenfield St. It also included five tables where children could create arts and crafts projects for gifts.
Only about half of Clarke Square residents filled out their 2010 census forms, information that the federal government uses for multiple purposes including allocating funds to communities. As a result, the Clarke Square Neighborhood Initiative is taking its own census.
