Journey House GED graduate Shanice Brown received the Jim and Karen Schlater Scholarship at the organization’s graduation dinner on Monday, May 23. This one-time award was presented to Shanice for her volunteerism and demonstrated commitment to helping her neighborhood.
Layton Boulevard West Neighbors (LBWN) is seeking volunteers to maintain and beautify the Valley Passage at 37th and Pierce Street, starting in May. Valley Passage, formerly an unused tunnel beneath the railroad tracks, now is a paved path leading to the Hank Aaron State Trail.
At first glance, the house under construction at 2221 S. 18th St. seems like any other new home rising from the ground, but it’s actually the first of its kind. The house, about 65 percent complete, is the first home to be built by participants of the Adult Build program at Milwaukee Christian Center.
