The facilities at Longfellow School and Journey House have long been overcrowded and distressed, but that will soon change. Construction has begun on the Journey House Center for Youth and Family Athletics. The new addition will serve both institutions by providing a new cafeteria, kitchen, gym, computer labs and classrooms.
A survey conducted by Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service found that central city communities such as Lindsay Heights, Clarke Square and Layton Boulevard West are not “food deserts,” and healthy groceries are relatively affordable. That raises a simple question with a complex answer: why is obesity so prevalent in these communities?
