UW-Milwaukee and Boswell Book Company are hosting “The Underground Railroad” author Colson Whitehead at UWM’s Union Station, 2200 E. Kenwood Ave., on Wednesday, Jan. 31 at 7 p.m. The event is $19 and includes a signed paperback copy of “The Underground Railroad.” UWM students, faculty and staff can receive a discounted price that includes a book. Tickets are available here.
The book tells the story of, Cora, a young slave on a cotton plantation in Georgia. An outcast even among her fellow Africans, she is on the cusp of womanhood – where even greater pain awaits. And so when Caesar, a slave who has recently arrived from Virginia, urges her to join him on the Underground Railroad, she seizes the opportunity and escapes with him. In Whiteheads ingenious conception, the Underground Railroad is no mere metaphor: engineers and conductors operate a secret network of actual tracks and tunnels beneath the Southern soil.
