Fondy Food Center signed a five-year lease for 80 acres of farmland with Afterglow Farms in Port Washington just as its farmers market season begins, according to Young Kim, executive director.
Farmers can rent affordable land and share equipment at the Port Washington farm. Kim hopes to lease the land to each farmer for at least three years, and, eventually, to develop the farm into a cooperative.
The market will be open only on Saturdays through June 18, and will operate four days a week from June 25 through Oct. 30. In the early part of the season, the market will offer flower and vegetable starter plants, perennials and potted plants.
The Fourth Annual Opening Day Celebration and BBQ Cook-off on June 25 kicks off Fondy’s full season. The opening day will feature live entertainment, cooking demonstrations, contests, kids’ face-painting and family activities.
Fondy Food Market is an outdoor farmers market at 2200 W. Fond du Lac Ave. in Lindsay Heights. The Fondy Food Center’s mission is to create fairer farming opportunities and provide access to healthy foods for residents of Milwaukee’s north side, with the goal of creating a year-round farm.
