One hundred years ago, the Milwaukee Public Schools Division of Recreation and Community Services was established to provide recreational and educational opportunities to youth, teens, adults, and seniors. Shortly thereafter, Milwaukee became known nationally as the “City of the Lighted Schoolhouse” for its use of public school facilities for evening recreation programming.
