Tobacco companies trick with treats

Mint, cherry, melon, chocolate and grape are some of the candy flavors many Wisconsin youth will get while Trick-or-Treating this year. They are also the same flavors used by the tobacco companies to fool teens like me into using tobacco. When I found out they were trying to manipulate me and the rest of my friends into using tobacco products with their “delicious” flavors, it sounded more “Manipulicious” than delicious.

Manipulicious is the name of our Fighting Against Corporate Tobacco (FACT) group’s latest activism campaign. FACT, created for and by Wisconsin teens, lets us use our voices to fight back against the tobacco companies.

Our Hispanic FACT Teen group at UMOS in Milwaukee is doing all we can to spread the word that underneath the colorful wrapping of chewing tobacco, little cigars and other tobacco products you’ll find many of the same old poisonous, cancer causing chemicals as cigarettes.

As a Hispanic teen, who works to educate and mentor other teens on tobacco abuse, I’m sick of being targeted by the tobacco companies and I’m committed to take a stand to fight with FACT.

To learn more about our “Manipulicious” Campaign and the FACT Movement, please check out fightwithfact.com.
