Teenagers between the ages of 16 and 19 as of June 1, 2013 are eligible to apply for Mayor Tom Barrett’s Summer Youth Internship Program (SYIP) program between now and April 5, 2013.

The program provides youth with employment and life skills and helps them meet educational, job readiness and career exploration goals. The SYIP intern is placed in a City department such as Fire, Library, Neighborhood Services, Office of the Mayor, Administration, Common Council, Public Works, Assessor, Health, Port, or City Development for 8 weeks.

SYIP 2013 programs runs from June 17 through August 9. Participants must commit to work the entire 8 week program. Applicants with plans for summer school, summer camps, family reunions, or unable to work the entire 8-week internship are asked not to apply.

Interns earn $7.25 an hour for 20 hours per week with a maximum of 160 hours for the duration of the internship. Priority is given to place high school juniors and seniors that have not previously participated in the program.

All applicants must live in the designated Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) area. The Block Grant area is roughly North Florist Avenue, east-Milwaukee River, south- Harrison Avenue, and west- North 59th Street. Also, the area in northwestern Milwaukee around 107th and Brown Deer Road.   Click here to see if you live in the area. 

How Do You Apply?

  1. Students must complete the on-line application. Click here to apply.
  2. Students must have their school send in their current school transcript with attendance information.
  • Mail or deliver the transcript to: SYIP, 809 N. Broadway, Milwaukee, WI 53202 – or –
  • Fax the transcript to: 414-286-0851

The  complete application (#1 and #2 above) must be submitted to the SYIP Office no later than 4:00 p.m. on Friday, April 5, 2013 .
