To recognize Mother’s Day in a special and healthy way, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Network is teaming up with Green Bay Packers’ kicker Mason Crosby and his wife, Molly, to increase awareness of breast cancer screening.
On Saturday, May 2, from 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm, the Crosbys will be at Brookfield Square Shopping Center’s center court to discuss the importance of screening to detect breast cancer early and save lives. Brookfield Square Shopping Center is located at 95 N. Moorland Rd., Brookfield. The event is free and open to the public.
For a suggested donation of $5, Mason Crosby will autograph specially designed greeting cards that can be given to loved ones for Mother’s Day. Crosby will also sign limited edition pink mini-footballs that will be available to purchase for $25. One hundred percent of funds from donations and the sale of the footballs will be used to support breast cancer research at the Froedtert & MCW cancer center.
According to the American Cancer Society, in 2015, an estimated 230,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the United States, and approximately 60,000 new cases of carcinoma in situ (CIS) will be diagnosed. CIS is non-invasive and is the earliest form of breast cancer. This year, more than 40,000 American women will die from breast cancer.
“Monthly breast self-exams, combined with regularly scheduled mammograms and an annual exam by a breast health provider, can dramatically increase the chances of finding cancer early, when it is most treatable,” said Sailaja Kamaraju, MD, a Froedtert & MCW medical oncologist.
On May 8, the Wisconsin Women’s Health Foundation will honor Dr. Kamaraju with a Champion in Women’s Health Award. With a strong interest in breast cancer survivorship, she has helped increase awareness of breast cancer and improve access to breast health services.
