A grand re-opening celebration was held at the Mitchell Park Domes Thursday, complete with music and a holiday floral show, which runs through Jan. 1.

The free all-day event was subsidized by a donation from Northwestern Mutual, according to County Executive Chris Abele.

The Tropical, Desert and Show domes were closed in February after a piece of concrete fell from the frame of the Desert Dome. A stainless steel mesh lining was installed inside each of the domes to prevent more frame pieces from falling. All three Domes were re-opened to the public by Oct. 29.

“Having [the Domes] officially re-opened is a big win for the South Side community and the greater Milwaukee area as a whole,” said State Rep. Josh Zepnick at the event.

The Mitchell Park Domes Task Force, composed of county supervisors, local leaders and residents, is considering the future of the Domes, which could include restoring the current structures or replacing the Domes with a new facility.
