It’s Friday in Milwaukee, and here are some things we think you should know about as the nation grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic.

  1. COVID-19 vaccine clinic at the Mexican Consulate: Friday, April 30
    The City of Milwaukee Health Department is offering vaccines at the Mexican Consulate, 1442 N. Prospect Ave., from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 30. Anyone 16 and older, regardless of their national origin, can receive a vaccine. To reserve an appointment, call 414-944-7586 Exts. 144 and 143. You can enter through the back door.
  2. May Day 2021 Milwaukee celebration: Saturday, May 1
    Voces de la Frontera is celebrating May Day with a community block party and rally. The day’s events will begin at the new Voces building, 733 W. Historic Mitchell St., at 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 1. The group will leave the office to march up South Sixth Street at noon and head toward the Milwaukee Federal Building, 517 E. Wisconsin Ave. Remarks will be made at the Milwaukee Federal Building at 1 p.m. Voces de la Frontera and Voces de la Frontera Essential Workers Rights Network are demanding that Congress and the Biden administration stop deportations, provide COVID-19 recovery for all and permit citizenship for all.   3. Community cleanup: Saturday, May 1
    Metcalfe Park Community Bridges is hosting the North 2 Center community cleanup and celebration. Volunteers can meet at Metcalfe Park Rising, 3401 W. Center St., and the cleanup will take place from noon to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 1. To sign up, click here. The cleanup will be split into six zones and bridge builders will lead volunteers and hand out supplies. The celebration will take place at Metcalfe Park Rising, 3401 W. Center St., from 3 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 1.
  4. Culinary market at the Sherman Phoenix: Sunday, May 2
    Kujichagulia Producers Cooperative is hosting a culinary market. The market will be at the Sherman Phoenix, 3536 W. Fond du Lac Ave., from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 2. The event features local food vendors including Cakes by Linda Kay, Flour Girl & Flame, Soulful Juice, Vegan Soul and more. Purchases can be made on site.
  5. Mutual aid food distribution: Sunday, May 2
    Milwaukee Turners, the Human Animal Welfare Society of Waukesha and the Los Brown Berets of Milwaukee are hosting a mutual aid food distribution. The partners will be distributing free food boxes, gift cards to El Rey and free pet food. The event is taking place from noon to 4 p.m. in the Mitchell Park Domes parking lot on South 27th Street and West Pierce Street on Sunday, May 2.
