5 things to do and know the weekend of Aug. 20

Several back-to-school giveaways are taking place this weekend. (NNS file photo)

It’s Friday in Milwaukee, and here are some things we think you should know about as you plan your weekend.

1. Back-to-school giveaway events: Friday, Aug. 20

Northcott Neighborhood House, 2460 N. 6th St., is hosting the “Harambee Back-to-School Block Party” from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20. There will be free food, books bags, school supplies and more. There will also be a COVID-19 vaccine clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20.

COA’s “Beyond the Book Bag” event will take place at the COA Goldin Center, 2320 W. Burleigh St., from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20. Registration is required. There will be book bags, school supplies, haircuts and more.

Capuchin Community Services annual school supply distribution will take place at the House of Peace, 1702 W. Walnut St., from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 20. Hayat Pharmacy will be hosting a COVID-19 vaccination clinic during this time.

2. Latinos por la Salud bicycle and walking club: Saturday, Aug. 21

Latinos por la Salud, a group that is part of the Sixteenth Street Health Clinics, is inviting people to join its weekly bicycle and walking club. This week, the group is meeting at the Mitchell Park Domes, 524 S. Layton Blvd., from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21.

3. Embody YOGA beginners yoga program: Saturday, Aug. 21

Embody YOGA is doing a beginner yoga program for individuals who are new to yoga or who prefer a slower paced class. The program is four-weeks long and starts Saturday, Aug. 21. The first class will take place at Embody YOGA, 3536 W. Fond du Lac Ave., Suite 303, at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21. Pre-registration is required and the program costs $50.

4. TBEY Arts Center “A Journey Through Dance” summer concert: Saturday, Aug. 21

TBEY Arts Center is presenting its 12th annual summer concert, “A Journey Through Dance,” which features youth performers from its summer dance camp. The concert will take place at Marcus Performing Arts Center, 123 E. State St. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 21. For tickets, click here.

5. Social X MKE homecoming week MKE Xpress Tour: Sunday, Aug. 22

Social X MKE is celebrating homecoming week from Saturday, Aug. 21 to Saturday, Aug. 28. As part of the celebration, the group is doing a MKE Xpress Tour, which will feature hidden gems, special guests, trivia and more. The tour will begin at Mobay Cafe, 1022 S. 1st St., and take place from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 22. Tickets cost $15.
