As you know, April is sexual assault awareness month, also known as SAAM. During SAAM individuals, communities and organizations across the nation raise awareness about sexual assault. Denim Day MKE raised awareness several ways, including training Youth Ambassadors to speak about sexual assault in their schools and community. As an extension of our 2017 programming, Priceless Incite launched “Denim, Diamonds and Pearls” an awareness raising event created to acknowledge and support the efforts of Denim Day Youth Ambassadors in Milwaukee.
Last year, we doubled our impact, continued to uplift the work of youth ambassadors, and expanded critical dialogue to include multiple forms of violence. The brunch honored sexual assault advocates and featured intergenerational speakers (female and male) who were survivors of child sexual assault, human trafficking, teen dating violence, date rape and sexual assault. Each presented a summary of what they have overcome, how they overcame it and offered wisdom for those impacted by the experience. Afterwards, table discussions were facilitated by advocates who serve the community, including facilitators for teens, and activities for youth under the age of 13. In partnership with AMRI Counseling, counselors were onsite, assisting participants with any stimulation that arose. Brunch concluded with Mayor Tom Barrett presenting certificates to the Denim Day MKE youth ambassadors.
This year we continue our theme of awareness (Denim), education (Diamonds), and wisdom (Pearls) while focusing on the impact sexual violence has on communities of color with respect to age, gender and sexual identity. Priceless Incite would like to invite you to join us as we create space for the experiences of all survivors to be heard. Register at https://goo.gl/forms/PwqzspcZIL7mNduC2
