Victory Garden Initiative Hiring an Urban Farmer and Educator

Victory Garden Initiative is a non-profit organization that builds communities who grow their own food, reintegrating human and food ecology. We are a small, and growing organization seeking the right set of people to take the organization to greater level of success. This is an exciting time to get involved in the creation a local, sustainable, nutritious, socially just food system for all, by working for one of the leading Milwaukee food organizations.

Job Posting: Urban Farmer and Educator
Reports to: Executive Director
Description: Full-time position beginning January 2015, with benefits package.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop and manage a productive farm on a 1.5 acre urban parcel in the Harambee neighborhood
  • Oversee a team of interns to conduct day-to-day farm duties
  • Lead an array of gardening classes and programs for children and adults
  • Work with a diverse array of volunteers and partners with varying skills sets, to help further Victory Garden Initiative’s mission
  • Support several projects, events, related to VGI’s mission
  • Build, install, construct all things related to farming, gardening and permaculture
  • Network and build community surrounding the farm

Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of small scale gardening and farming
  • Experience teaching children and adults
  • Experience with project management
  • Knowledge about the food system and passion for improving it
  • Ability to engage others in changing the food system
  • Drivers License
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and carry-out farm/garden related manual labor activities
  • Available some evenings and weekends

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of nonprofit work
  • Experience using Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter and other social media tools
  • Associates degree or higher
  • Bilingual English/Spanish
