ArtWorks is seeking interns for its paid summer internships — the deadline to apply online is June 1, 2015. High school students can apply now for one of two internships:
Internship 1: “Sharing Our Vibrant Lives Community Garden & Sculpture Garden” – Lead artist/supervisor: Tia Richardson. Interns who live in or are connected to the Layton Boulevard West Neighborhood will be hired as a team to collaborate in the design and painting of a large 2D wall-sized outdoor mural and sculpture garden that will be installed in Burnham Park. Interns will learn community-building through several structured public workshops for neighborhood residents to participate in the development of the mural’s content. The public workshops will involve games that use movement and story-sharing for everyone to share about their lives and connections to their park.
Afterwards, the team will create a design capturing the essence of the stories shared and honoring the vibrant lives in the area, and then paint the mural and sculptures. A portion of the painting process will be open to community residents. During the design process there will be an opportunity, not a requirement, to learn some Adobe Photoshop for interns who are interested. This program builds cooperation skills, good listening skills and a willingness to stretch beyond one’s comfort zone.
Dates and Times: The program will run Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9am-12pm with some evening and weekend work shifts TBD from June 29 to August 21, 2015.

Internship 2: “ArtWorks for You” – Under the direction of artist and entrepreneur, Christopher McIntyre Perceptions, this program will challenge interns to create capital from creative concepts made into tangible products through the process of relief prints. Interns will learn the business side of the art market and develop skills such as marketing, branding, merchandising, customer service, sales, finance and more. Interns will also get an opportunity to sell their art to buyers at summer markets such as Bronzeville and Brady Street Days.
Dates and Times: The program will run three days a week, typically 12-3 p.m. with some evening and weekend work shifts from June 24 through August 12, 2015.
Location: The internship will be based at ArtWorks for Milwaukee, 207 E. Buffalo St., Suite 600 with some sessions at locations around the City which are accessible by bus.
Candidate Qualifications for ArtWorks’ internships:
- No prior art experience or talent is needed.
- You must be enrolled in a high school in Milwaukee County for the duration of the program or have just graduated.
- Priority will be given to students experiencing the following:
- Under performance in school
- Emotional or physical disabilities
- Barriers to employment
