VITA program begins free tax preparation

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program will provide free preparation of state and federal taxes by a Milwaukee organization. The program serves residents of Milwaukee County. The Social Development Commission is the lead agency for VITA.

The program provides low and middle income residents with a household income of $56,000 or less to receive tax services at no charge. Eligible residents can get all of their tax returns back and avoid high preparation fees or refund anticipation loads.

Tax preparation is offered through April 18 at two sites Monday through Saturday, and two additional sites that will operate on different days of the week across Milwaukee County.

Qualifications for Milwaukee County residents, information on what to bring and the schedule for services is available in English and Spanish.

Residents meeting qualifications can use the online Facilitated Self Assistance service which provides the ability to file electronically for free at www.MyFreeTaxes.com.

This if the 15th season that the VITA tax service program has helped residents maximize their tax returns. In the first 14 years of the program almost 163,000 returns have been filed resulting in more than $174 million in tax refunds and credits back to residents and the local economy. The program will run through April 18.

For more than 50 years, the Social Development Commission has operated as the Community Action Agency for Milwaukee County. SDC serves as a planner, coordinator, and provider of human service programs for low-income individuals and families residing in Milwaukee County. The agency is an intergovernmental commission and is governed by a board of 18 citizens from Milwaukee County, each of whom hold the title of “Commissioner.” For more information on SDC’s programs and services, visit cr-sdc.org.
