The Social Development Commission (SDC) will host the 2016 Summit on Poverty, Dismantling Poverty: A Courageous Conversations on Tuesday, August 2 from 7:30 AM – 2:00 PM at the Italian Conference Center, 631 East Chicago Street, Milwaukee. The free event is designed to be a launch pad for creating common themes that will serve as the foundation for developing an anti-poverty agenda for implementation.

Poverty continues to escalate in Milwaukee County, in particular the city of Milwaukee, and it is imperative that this perpetual and growing issue be addressed.

The SDC Summit on Poverty was developed in conjunction with the NAACP and several community partners. It is designed to fully integrate community leaders, local and state government, service providers and practitioners, churches, community volunteers, youth and young adult advocates, and most importantly, the active participation of people impacted by poverty.

Keynote speaker, Dr. Joyce DeGruy, is a nationally and internationally renowned researcher, educator, author and presenter. DeGruy is an ambassador for healing and a voice for those who have struggled in search of the past, and continue to struggle through the present. Dr. DeGruy will help shape and drive the discussions that are necessary to begin to help heal our community.

Attendees will have courageous conversations in four solution-based sessions that will focus on:

  • Policies & Systems
  • Trauma & Maslow’s Hierarchy
  • The Ism’s
