A free career training program, the ProStart Culinary and Job Readiness Program, is a new combined program that will begin classes on Monday, August 8, through a joint partnership between the Social Development Commission (SDC) and HeartLove Place. The program will provide training in the fields of culinary arts and food service and encompass job readiness training. The culinary arts and food service portion of the program is modeled after the National Restaurant Association Educational Foundation ProStart curriculum. SDC’s Education and Career Services will provide Job Readiness training.

The 14-week program will hold classes Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM – 2:30 PM. The curriculum will incorporate hands-on culinary workshops, on the job training, and food service practicums including food safety procedures, career exploration in food service, proper cutting techniques and will also hear from industry guest speakers. Students will need to pass the ServSafe and ProStart examinations to be considered employable in the industry. Over a 10-week span of the course, students will obtain job readiness skills with a focus on topics such as resume writing, interviewing, dress, telephone etiquette and social media dos and don’ts.

Participants in the program will receive an assessment of their needs and, once needs are identified, can elect to work with HeartLove Place’s Family Resource center to address barriers to success. Barriers may include transportation issues, interest in obtaining a GED, assistance with math and/or reading and other challenges.

Attendance at one of the information sessions is required to participate in the class. Online registration is available at cr-sdc.org/programs/education services. Information sessions will be held at the Social Development Commission, 1730 West North Avenue, Milwaukee on:

  • Wednesday, August 3 at 6:00 PM
  • Thursday, August 4 at 11:00 AM
