Hundreds of area residents in need were treated to an early Thanksgiving meal of African and Jamaican cuisine Saturday morning thanks to the generosity of a restauranteur and food pantry.

Yollande Tchouapi Deacon, owner of Irie Zulu, provided low-income families with a free hearty pre-Thanksgiving sit-down meal of peanut stew and rice, curry chicken, South African curry vegetables and plantain. Tosa Cares supplied free canned goods, clothing, fresh turkeys and other items for attendees to take home after their meal.

The meal and food distribution took place at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, where Tosa Cares operates a food pantry serving struggling Milwaukee-area residents.

“My day started at 4 a.m.,” Deacon wrote on Facebook early Saturday before she and her team began serving food at 8 a.m. “I’m eager to cook this Thanksgiving meal for the less fortunate and serve with my best smile.” Deacon has provided meals of her restaurant’s signature cuisine for the less fortunate at Thanksgiving time for the last three years.
