City leaders and residents gathered earlier this month to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Hank Aaron State Trail as well as the reopening of its west end.

During the ceremony, the Friends of Hank Aaron State Trail unveiled two of five sculptures in the “People of the Road” monument. Designed by artist Richard Taylor, the monument honors the men and women who worked for Milwaukee Road. The public art project will be visible to thousands daily at the corner of W. Canal Street and W. Milwaukee Road. Supporters have already contributed more than half of the funds to complete the monument. The Friends of Hank Aaron State Trail seeks additional support to install the remaining sculptures this year.
