There’s so much to see in Milwaukee.

If you take the time.

Over the summer, NNS photographer Sue Vliet captured images of murals around town, from lesser-known artworks to familiar favorites to pieces whose paint is still wet.

  • This classic mural by Reynaldo Hernandez is named "Celebrate the Arts" and was originally painted when the building housed the Inner City Arts Council. (Photo by Sue Vliet)
  • "Phoenix Rising" is located on North 27th Street in the Avenues West neighborhood and was painted by Kate Madigan. (Photo by Sue Vliet)
  • This Artists Work in Education mural in Alice's Garden was painted by Gabrielle Tesfaye and youths from Neu-Life Community Development to honor the story of Caroline Quarlls and her experience with the Underground Railroad. (Photo by Sue Vliet)
  • This Tia Richardson mural, “The Rebirthing of the Earth Mother," is part of the Historical Garfield Apartments in Bronzeville, located on Vel R. Phillips Avenue. (Photo by Sue Vliet)
  • This mural is at the Hmong American Friendship Association. (Photo by Sue Vliet)

  • Tia Richardson's "Sherman Park Rising" mural, 4715 W. Center St., was painted with community members a year after the Sherman Park unrest. (Photo by Adam Carr)
  • Ras' Ammar Nsoroma's "Patchwork" mural on North Avenue, which was originally painted 1991, with the lower portion being refreshed in 2012. (Photo by Adam Carr)

This gallery is not an attempt to be complete or comprehensive, but rather, we sought to document some of the beauty on the walls in our neighborhoods.

Today we feature murals from the North Side.
