It’s Friday in Milwaukee, and here are some things we think you should know about as the nation grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you would like your event to be considered for this column, please email info@milwaukeenns.org and put “5 things” in the subject line by noon Thursday.

  1. Cocina medicinal en Español con CORE El Centro: Friday, Aug. 14
CORE El Centro is hosting a monthly virtual medicinal cooking class in Spanish. This week’s class will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 14. To join the class, click the Zoom link. The class will focus on nutrition, seasonal foods and medicinal plants that help support your health and wellness.
  2. Guest makers at the Underground Makers Market: Saturday, Aug. 15
The Underground Makers Market, located at the lower level of the Sherman Phoenix, 3536 W. Fond du Lac Ave., is hosting weekly pop-up shops for guest makers. The first pop-up is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15. This week’s featured maker is Pam Graham of Nandi Collections.
  3. Summer cleanup on Lincoln Creek and West Basin: Saturday, Aug. 15
The Northwest Side Community Development Corporation, the Milwaukee Riverkeeper and their partners are hosting a summer cleanup of the Lincoln Creek and West Basin. The cleanup will begin at the Bee Bus Sign, 4350 N. 35th St., at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15. Those interested in attending are asked to wear a mask, practice social distancing and bring their own gloves, snacks and water. Hand sanitizer and trash bags will be provided.
  4. “Black is Beautiful” bike ride: Sunday, Aug. 16
WebsterX, Zed Kenzo, Darius Smith and Noga Faith Salomon are leading the “Black is Beautiful Volume II” bike ride starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16. The ride will begin at Kilbourn Reservoir Park, 2230 N. Bremen St. The plan is to depart at 2 p.m. and bike 12 miles. This is an opportunity to take a breather and focus on Black mental health. Mr. New York will be providing the music.
  5. Mural unveiling and fashion show: Sunday, Aug. 16
The unveiling of a mural featuring prominent Milwaukee figures is taking place at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 16. The mural, which was painted by Art-I-Culture, is located at the intersection of North 14th and West Vliet streets across from Repairers of the Breach, 1335 W. Vliet St. There will be a fashion show featuring the Theresa Maria Collection, food by Coggs Kitchen and Funky Fresh Spring Rolls and a performance by poet laureate Dasha Kelly.
