It’s Friday in Milwaukee, and here are some things we think you should know about as the nation grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you would like your event to be considered for this column, please email info@milwaukeenns.org and put “5 things” in the subject line by noon Thursday.

  1. Participatory budgeting: Reclaiming our power: Friday, May 14
Metcalfe Park Community Bridges is hosting a discussion on participatory budgeting. The presentation is in response to the funding the City of Milwaukee is receiving from the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. Participants will learn how they can make their voice heard. The meeting will take place on Facebook Live from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. on Friday, May 14.
  2. COVID-19 vaccination clinic at SDC: Saturday, May 15
The Social Development Commission or SDC is hosting a free COVID-19 vaccination clinic in partnership with Ascension. The clinic will take place at SDC (Northwest), 9155 N. 76th St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 15. Walk-ins are welcome or appointments can be made here. The first 100 guests will receive a $25 gift card to Walmart.
  3. Family craft day at Vibez Creative Arts Space: Saturday, May 15
Vibez Creative Arts Space, 3536 W. Fond du Lac Ave., is hosting a family craft day from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 15. Families and friends can enjoy socially distant DIY craft projects. The craft projects range in price from $5 to $25. This is a walk-in event and participants will be seated as space is available.
  4. Urban Underground community cleanup: Saturday, May 15
Urban Underground’s youth leaders are hosting a community cleanup. The cleanup will take place at the Employ Milwaukee building, 2338 N. 27th St., from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 15. Cleaning supplies will be provided by Keep Greater Milwaukee Beautiful. Participants are encouraged to dress accordingly and follow COVID-19 guidelines.
  5. Parklawn Assembly of God community grocery giveaway: Sunday, May 16
UpStart Kitchen, Just One More Ministry and Parklawn Assembly of God are hosting a community grocery giveaway. The giveaway will be held in the Parklawn Assembly of God parking lot, 3725 N. Sherman Blvd., from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. or while supplies last on Sunday, May 16. For additional questions call 414-442-7411. Bonus: No Menthol Sunday: Sunday, May 16

On this day, faith leaders are encouraged to discuss tobacco awareness and prevention.
