This article has been updated to reflect that the federal ban on evictions has ended.

After more than a year, the federal halt on eviction has ended.

This means that tenants can, once again, be evicted for owed rent.

Milwaukee has resources for people who fear losing their home.

If you have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic

Community Advocates and the Social Development Commission: Both agencies are still providing rental assistance to Milwaukee residents who have been affected by COVID-19.

You can find the application for Community Advocates here and for the Social Development Commission here.

Muskego Way Neighborhood Funds: If you live in or close to the borders of South 16th to South 27th streets and West Greenfield Avenue or West Becher Street there are assistance funds.

Contact Alison Henderson at ahenderson@mccwi.org or 414-502-7199.

If you have not been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic but still need assistance.

Right to Counsel: The “Right to Counsel Milwaukee” pilot program provides free legal counsel to Milwaukeeans who make under 200% of the federal poverty line and who face eviction.

You can call the hotline at (414) 892-7368 or visit the website at EvictionFreeMKE.org.

Milwaukee Rental Housing Resource Center: The Milwaukee Rental Housing Resource Center connects tenants and landlords with wraparound services. It assists in eviction prevention, mediation, homeless prevention and legal service. It’s a good first step regardless of the housing issue you are facing.

Officials can be contacted at info@renthelpmke.org or 414-895-RENT.

Housing Authority: The Housing Authority has some open waiting lists for specific properties it owns.

Milwaukee Autonomous Tenants Union, or MATU: The MATU organizes to challenge evictions, makes tenants aware of their rights and it sometimes takes on negligent landlords.

You can contact the group at intake@matunion.org or 414-410-9714.
