It’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and although the day is a federal holiday, Monday would not be complete without reflection or action.

Here are five ways to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

1. MLK Day Milwaukee Health Fair

Jump at the Sun, the Wisconsin Tobacco Prevention and Poverty Network and others are hosting a health fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 1530 W. Atkinson Ave. Health awareness games and prizes, food giveaways, COVID testing/vaccinations and flu shots will be available. In addition, $50 gift cards for first dose and $25 gift cards for second dose and boosters can be expected while supplies last.

The groups also are hosting a virtual workshop for public policy advocacy at noon. Click here for more information.

2. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Tu B’Shvat: food, environmental and racial justice

Not only is it Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but it is also Tu B’Shvat, the Jewish New Year of Trees. Celebrate both of these together at this panel discussion on food justice, environmental justice and racial justice featuring Venice Williams and Michelle Dobbs and hosted by Tikkun Ha-Ir. The virtual event begins at noon. Click here to register and for more information.

3. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day 21st Annual MLK justice program

This two-part program begins with an in-person gathering at 1 p.m. at the Martin Luther King, Jr. statue at the intersection of North Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and West Walnut Street. This event will include civil rights songs and listening to the words of Dr. King performed by Andre Lee Ellis as well as reflections on the day’s meaning.

The second part of the day’s justice program is a virtual event beginning at 7 p.m. that features a panel discussion on racial justice. Click here for more information.

4. MLK Day 2022 at the Milwaukee Public Library

The Milwaukee Public Library is hosting a live virtual program for Martin Luther King Jr. Day featuring community partners such as the Wisconsin Black Historical Society, MKE Black, Ko-Thi Dance Company, Village Drum Company and more. The program begins at 1 p.m. on Facebook.

The Milwaukee Public Library also has an array of resources related to Martin Luther King Jr. Day at the bottom of this page.

5. Dr. King Birthday Celebration at the Marcus Center

The 38th annual celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is virtual this year, beginning at 1 p.m. on the Marcus Center website.
