1. Sacred Garden Open Mic: Friday, July 1

Poets, musicians, people with something to say and those who appreciate performing arts are welcome to attend. The event starts at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 1 at Arts @ Large, 1105 S. 5th St. Food and drink are provided. This event is for those ages 15 and older. 2. “We Locked In MKE”: Friday, July 1

As part of an effort to address rising levels of violence involving youths, community partners have organized “We Locked In MKE.” This overnight event is aimed at youth ages 13 through 17 and features food, music, entertainment, resources and more. The event runs from 8 p.m. on Friday, July 1 to 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 2 at the Northwest YMCA, 9050 N. Swan Ave. For more information, email welockedinmke@gmail.com.

3. Fred Boswell, Jr. live: Saturday, July 2

Drummer, producer, songwriter, recording artist and Milwaukee High School of the Arts alum Fred Boswell, Jr. comes home. See him live from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, July 2 at the Jazz Estate, 2423 N. Murray Ave. Tickets here.

4. Listening party and donation drive: Saturday, July 2

Bring non-perishables and hygiene products to donate at this donation drive. Additionally, local emerging musicians can get their music played by donating to the Milwaukee Rescue Mission. The event starts at 3 p.m. on Saturday, July 2 at 1717 S. 12th St.  

5. See Me Because portrait exhibition: Ongoing until Sept. 25

See how Milwaukee’s young people of color see themselves and portray complex narratives about their identities. This is an annual initiative organized by Art Start to aid Milwaukee youths of color in telling their own stories through custom portraits. The exhibition is ongoing through Sept. 25 at the Harbor View Plaza, 600 E. Greenfield Ave.
