A day-long summit for youths to learn about wellness, tech, entrepreneurship and leadership is coming to Milwaukee on Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee’s Helene Zelazo Center for the Performing Arts.
The STEAM & Dream MKE Adult and Youth Summit seeks to engage youths ages 12-17 and adults with the tools to pursue their dreams in technology and entrepreneurship. It will be filled with different workshops centered around STEAM topics. STEAM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.
There will also be a hip-hop yoga class for middle schoolers and a fireside chat for high school students and adults with “Earn Your Leisure,” a podcast hosted by Rashad Bilal and Troy Millings, that gives financial views into the entertainment and sports industries and highlights the backstories of entrepreneurs.
Kenge Adams, an officer with the Sherman Phoenix Foundation, one of the partnering groups, said organizers want youths to leave the summit dreaming large “and feeling like they have the resources to make their dreams a reality.”
STEAM & Dream is a collaboration of Black-led community-based organizations working to elevate the next generation of tech leaders and create opportunities for Black youths to explore and innovate in STEM – science, tech, engineering and math. The program, funded by American Family Insurance, was created to aid K-12 students and young adults in discovering career fields in business and tech.
Partners include Connect Business Consulting, Sherman Phoenix, Milky Way Tech Hub, Journey House, Young Enterprising Society, Black on Black Education, Earn Your Leisure, Discovery World, Grateful Girls, PerceptForm, Latinos in Tech, Thee Tailored Life, Chandra Cooper, and Milwaukee Film.
“As we’re being catalyzed to a more tech-centric world, communities of color are often overlooked in conversations and advancements brought to other communities,” organizers said in a news release.
“STEAM & Dream functions to educate and prepare Black communities and historically underserved communities for careers in tech and strives to close technology and equity gaps for urban communities propelling them into the future of tech.”
