The Greater Milwaukee Foundation presents Community Philanthropy: Leading from Lived Experience as the final session of the year in its A MILWAUKEE FOR ALL educational convening series. Join the Foundation from 9-10:30 a.m. Friday, Oct. 28, and apply the power of community voice.
This free, virtual event will feature Tonya Allen, president of the McKnight Foundation, in a dynamic dialogue with Ellen Gilligan, president & CEO of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.

Allen leads the Minneapolis-based foundation’s majority women, majority people-of-color, senior leadership team seeking to advance a more just, creative and abundant future.
The dialogue between these two national philanthropic leaders will highlight the need to include historically underrepresented communities in philanthropic conversations. Other topics include:
- A “radical love” approach to philanthropy
- The benefit of framing issues around assets rather than deficits
- Recognizing that real change requires effort, persistence over time and acknowledging incremental progress
Following the conversation, Gilligan and Allen will participate in a roundtable discussion with Clintel Hasan, strategic initiatives manager at Milwaukee Succeeds; Kevin Newell, founder and CEO of Royal Capital; and Glenn Carson, director of the Milwaukee Community Schools Partnership through United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County. They will explore how national trends in community philanthropy are illustrated in Milwaukee-specific efforts.
In the event’s interactive closing segment, all attendees will be invited to share their ideas and strategies about effective actions to empower community philanthropy and help create a Milwaukee for all.
