It’s Friday in Milwaukee, and here are some things we think you should know about. If you would like your event to be considered for this column, please submit your news by clicking here at least two weeks in advance.

1. Deadline to apply for MCTS college scholarship: Friday, Jan. 6

The Milwaukee County Transit System, or MCTS, is sponsoring a scholarship for high school seniors who live and attend school in Milwaukee County and plan to attend a trade school, college, or university. Applicants will write a short essay inspired by a Rosa Parks quote: “Each person must live their life as a model for others.” Three winners will receive $1,000. Applications must be completed by Friday, Jan. 6.

2. “Bad As Can” book release and reception: Friday, Jan. 6

Street photographer Isaac Harris releases his first self-published book “Bad As Can,” a collection of street photography spanning over a decade from around the world. The book release and reception runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 6 at Var Gallery, located at 706 S. 5th St. More information and RSVP here.

3. Amani United presidential inauguration: Saturday, Jan. 7

Amani United is celebrating the inauguration of its new president Elizabeth Brown. Be part of the celebration in person at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7 at the Dominican Center, located at 2470 W. Locust St. You can also attend virtually here.

4. Jazz and pop at Sherman Perk: Saturday, Jan. 7

Listen to jazz and pop covers and original music from Joseph Michael at Sherman Perk Coffee Shop from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7, located at 4924 W. Roosevelt Drive.

5. Get a free bag of rice: Saturday, Jan. 7

The Hmong American Friendship Association will be giving away 150 bags of rice on a first-come-first-served basis from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 3824 W. Vliet St. Must bring ID and proof of address. No one will be turned away because of income or ZIP code, but only one bag of rice will be given per address.

BONUS: Free community clothing: Saturday, Jan. 7

Strong Native Minds has organized a free clothing giveaway from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 7 at Lutheran Church of the Great Spirit, located at 3127 S. Howell Ave.
