It’s Friday in Milwaukee, and here are some things we think you should know about. If you would like your event to be considered for this column, please submit your news by clicking here at least two weeks in advance.
1. Sacred Garden open mic: Friday, Feb. 3
This recurring open mic night is open to poets, musicians, performers and creatives of all types to share their art. It is a great opportunity to see what Milwaukee artists have to say, or to share your art with a supportive community. The open mic takes place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3 at Arts @ Large, located 1100 S. 5th St.
2. Indaba African Ball: Saturday, Feb. 4
Celebrate Black History Month with an African-inspired attire and fashion show, African and Caribbean-inspired hors d’oeuvres, marketplace, music and more at the Indaba African Ball. The ball takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4 at the St. Ann Center for Intergenerational Care, located at 2450 W. North Ave. Tickets are $75 and support a concert and events series at the Indaba Band Shell throughout the summer.

3. Meeting for Amani residents: Saturday, Feb. 4
Amani neighborhood residents (and only residents of the Amani neighborhood) are invited to monthly meetings to discuss topics related to the Amani neighborhood. These are recurring meetings that start at 8:30 a.m. on the first Saturday of every month. This month’s meeting is from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Dominican Center, located at 2470 W. Locust Ave. or online via Zoom here.
4. Nasal NARCAN administration training: Saturday, Feb. 4
Naloxone, most often sold under the name “NARCAN,” can be used for emergency treatment of a suspected opioid overdose. However, properly using naloxone involves correctly identifying an opioid overdose and knowing the laws and procedures for its use. The Milwaukee Public Library will be providing free training on how to spot opioid overdose and properly administer naloxone from 11 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 4 at Mitchell Street Library, located at 906 W. Historic Mitchell St.
5. Winterfest 2023: Saturday, Feb. 4
Join the Urban Ecology Center for “Winterfest 2023;” a day of sledding, snowshoeing, ice skating, cross country skiing, s’mores, snacks and more. Winterfest is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4 at the Urban Ecology Center’s Washington Park location at 1859 N. 40th St. All ages welcome.
BONUS: League of Women Voters voter guide: ongoing
The League of Women Voters has published a voter guide for all races on the ballot on Feb. 21 and April 4. Vote411.org provides information on how to register to vote, where to vote as well as answers from candidates on the ballot in response to questions like what qualifies them to run for office and where they stand on particular issues.
