It’s Monday in Milwaukee, and here are some things we think you should know about. If you would like your event to be considered for this column, please submit your news by clicking here at least two weeks in advance.

See the 10 finalists from Milwaukee-area high schools deliver monologues written by contemporary Black playwrights on Wednesday at the Quadracci Powerhouse stage at Milwaukee Repertory Theater, located at 108 E. Wells St.  (Image provided by Milwaukee Rep)

 1. MPS school board candidate forum: Wednesday, Feb. 15

Get to know the candidates for the Milwaukee Board of School Directors, or MPS school board, and ask them questions about their platforms at this candidate forum. The forum takes place from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 15 at Wantable Cafe, located at 123 E. Walker St.

The candidates for school board will not appear on the ballot until April’s general election, but there are primary races for some aldermanic, State Supreme Court and local judge seats on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Learn how to vote early here.

2. Next Narrative Monologue Competition: Wednesday, Feb. 15

See 10 finalists from Milwaukee-area high schools deliver monologues written by contemporary Black playwrights. The winner will represent Milwaukee at New York City’s Apollo Theater for the national finals later this spring. The competition is free to attend and is at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the  Quadracci Powerhouse stage at Milwaukee Repertory Theater, located at 108 E. Wells St. More information here. Learn more about the competition here.

3. Training for parents (child care provided): Wednesday, Feb. 15

“Co-regulation” in parental relationships refers to when parents help guide children through emotions with verbal prompts, modeling desired behavior or otherwise helping the child identify and process emotions in a healthy way. Wellpoint Care Network, formerly known as SaintA, will be hosting a workshop on co-regulation strategies for parents from 5 p.m. to 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 8901 W. Capitol Drive. The workshop is free, and food and child care will be provided. Email aalter@wellpoint.org to sign up or fill out this form.

4. Pinto con Tinto: Carnival mask making: Thursday, Feb. 16

Paint masks in celebration of the tradition of “Carnival” while sipping “tinto” or wine. Carnival is a tradition of festivals and public celebration from Italy to Brazil that takes place in the weeks before the Catholic observance of Lent. This event focuses on the cultural history of Carnival in Brazil. The event runs from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16 at Latino Arts, Inc., located at 1028 S. 9th St. Tickets are $25 and include masks, painting supplies, wine and tapas.

5. ‘Loudmouth’: a documentary about the Rev. Al Sharpton: Thursday, Feb. 16

The Rev. Al Sharpton has been in the public eye for decades, often at the center of discussions about structural racism in the United States. “Loudmouth” spotlights Sharpton’s public life in order to determine “whether Al Sharpton has gone mainstream or if America has finally decided to listen.” As part of Milwaukee Film’s Black History Month programming, the one-time screening of this documentary will be at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 16 at the Oriental Theatre, located at 2230 N. Farwell Ave. More information, including on cost, is here.

We’ve listed other events related to Black History Month this week and throughout the rest of the month here.

BONUS: Don’t forget to register by Monday for the Daddy/Daughter Dance!
