5 things to know and do this week in Milwaukee: Feb. 27 to March 3

It’s Monday in Milwaukee, and here are some things we think you should know about. If you would like your event to be considered for this column, please submit your news by clicking here at least two weeks in advance.

For nearly 20 years, TRUE Skool has provided hands-on learning of media and art related to hip-hop culture. This spring’s orientation is Monday and is mandatory to take part in the programming. (NNS file photo by Andrea Waxman)

1. TRUE Skool spring afterschool orientation: Monday, Feb. 27

TRUE Skool programming is for high school students to develop their media and artistic skills through hands-on learning of art disciplines related to hip-hop culture. Those who want to attend the organization’s weekly classes and use its equipment to develop their projects need to attend this orientation starting at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 27 at 161 W. Wisconsin Ave., Suite 1000.

2. Pitch Black: market analysis: Monday, Feb. 27

MKE Black hosts this learning and networking event for entrepreneurs from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27 at Sherman Phoenix, located at 3536 W. Fond Du Lac Ave. Tickets are $12.

3. Winter warmup on Locust: Tuesday, Feb. 28

The Dominican Center will be giving away winter clothing essentials, soup kits, art supplies, a gift related to Black History Month and more to help you beat the winter blues. The giveaway runs from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 at the Dominican Center’s location at 2470 W. Locust Ave. Both drive-thru and walk-up options are available.

4. Overview of African American history in Wisconsin: Tuesday, Feb. 28

Historian and archivist Clayborn Benson from the Wisconsin Black Historical Society will provide a broad overview of Wisconsin’s African American history. The free talk runs from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 28 at the Center Street Library, 2727 W. Fond Du Lac Ave.

5. Domes yoga and herb walk: Wednesday, March 1

Reset and refresh with this yoga class and walk around The Domes, from 5:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 1 on the Mitchell Park Domes, located at 524 S. Layton Blvd. Tickets are $22 for members of The Domes, $25 for non-members.

BONUS: Dialogue on local news and democracy: Tuesday, Feb. 28

With only 26% of Americans having a favorable opinion of news media and about one-third of newspapers set to close nationally by 2025, the future of local news is uncertain. Hear about the challenges facing journalism from local experts at this panel from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 at the Marquette University Alumni Memorial Union, Room 163, located at 1442 W.
