Instacart is now accepting SNAP payments, expanding to all 50 states and Washington D.C.

The online grocery business has allowed SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, to be used as a payment option since 2020. But it announced the expansion in August.

What does this mean for Milwaukee?

Milwaukee residents who receive SNAP benefits and do not have reliable transportation can get groceries delivered to their homes.

Sherrie Tussler, the CEO of the Hunger Task Force, said the news is huge for Milwaukee because transportation plays a huge role in whether people have access to healthy food.

During the height of the pandemic, she said, the Hunger Task Force saw an uptick in people who did not want to leave their homes. The organization started working with the food delivery company DoorDash to get stock boxes delivered to seniors.

Because that program only served older residents, the Instacart option “will be great for all those people who don’t fall into that category but need assistance,” she said.
