Hello Milwaukee, I, Dakota Barnes-Rush, am the newest sports reporting intern for the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service.

My passion for journalism stems from my desire to uplift marginalized voices and share stories that can ignite change.

As a Black man, I’ve seen firsthand how narratives can shape perceptions and impact lives.

This personal connection to the power of storytelling has fueled my dedication to journalism.

I am a junior journalism major at Marquette University. During my time at the Marquette Wire (the university’s student news site), I have covered a range of impactful stories.

Sharing meaningful stories

One memorable experience was reporting on the men’s basketball team’s journey to “March Madness.” I delved into the players’ lives, uncovering their challenges, victories and determination.

Similarly, highlighting the women’s basketball team’s performance in the “Ole Miss” NCAA tournament showcased their resilience and drive.

One interview that left a lasting impression was with a player who overcame personal struggles to excel on the team.

His story resonated with readers, illustrating the profound influence that journalism can have in sharing inspiring narratives.

This reinforced my belief that journalism goes beyond facts: it’s about sharing meaningful stories that educate, inform and inspire change.

Commitment to community service

I am also deeply committed to community service and have been actively involved in initiatives that empower and uplift others.

Through my involvement with Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, I have participated in programs such as “Go-to-High School, Go-to-College” and “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People,” where I have had the opportunity to mentor students and encourage civic engagement.

These experiences have reinforced my belief in the importance of using my platform as a journalist to advocate for positive change.

For instance, I successfully implemented my first session with the “Go to High School, Go to College” program in collaboration with Siefert Elementary School and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee.

‘Embracing my responsibilities’

I am honored to serve as the internal liaison for the newly established organization, Black Men United, a national community service group that focuses on restoring and rebuilding Black communities. I hold multiple positions, including event planning and historian.

In embracing my responsibilities and overcoming challenges, I have learned that true leadership is about service, resilience and dedication to the greater good.

I am inspired by the possibilities ahead and motivated by the impact I can continue to make.

Whether through my role as a journalist, fraternity leader or community advocate, I strive to be a voice for those who often go unheard.
