Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service met up with Black Space HQ, a mental wellness group hoping to “normalize the conversation” around Black and Brown peoples’ mental health.

When NNS visited, the group was hosting a sound healing class by Whitney Bingham at 414LORAL, a Black-owned floral shop locatrd at 1739 N. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Here, attendees got to meditate with the sounds of Tibetan singing bowls, which may lessen tension, depression and fatigue, and improve mood, according to a study by the National Institutes of Health. People were also encouraged to make a bouquet of flowers at the session.

Black Space was founded by Corey Fells, an advocate for Black and Brown communities in Milwaukee; Lia Knox, who holds a doctorate in counseling psychology with over 30 years of experience; and Darius Smith, a visual artist and community advocate. 

The group offers free mental wellness services, ranging from mediation classes, yoga and group therapy to art and cooking therapy.
