Here’s a confession: PrincessSafiya Byers is one of the main reasons why I wanted to write for NNS.

Her writing on housing and homelessness was, and is, to the point, clear and written specifically for people who need the information. However, at the same time, she educates other readers who don’t have those same needs.

Her writing accomplishes all these things without sacrificing nuance.

She can write to the point without missing the bigger picture. I believe that her story about Black conservatives in the city does all of these things and reminds me why I’m so lucky to be her colleague. (No, she is not paying me to say this).

Although Milwaukee as a city and its Black residents as a group, are reliably Democratic, no group is all the same. I’m sure the conservatives she spoke with for the piece, Erik Ngutse and David King, appreciate the care with which she wrote about their views – as would, I imagine, other conservatives of color or any other reader who wants to get a view of Milwaukee that isn’t just a overly generalized bird’s-eye view.

This story provides a real-time picture of what life is actually like in the city.
