Though many Milwaukee Public Schools will be closed over the summer, Milwaukee Recreation still has a full and fun summer planned for students.
Because of lead contamination, many MPS buildings are off-limits so issues can be addressed before the next school year begins.
That means summer programs can’t happen at many of the schools where they usually take place.
But both MPS and MKE REC have worked to ensure that all students can still be served over the summer.
Summer Academy
Natalie Anderson, manager of MPS’ extended learning opportunities, said Summer Academy still plans to serve in the same capacity it has in past summers.
Registration has closed for the program, which offers specialty classes for students in the sixth to 12th grades.
“We pivoted all of the school to different sites,” she said. “We still have plans to serve the same capacity and have a fun-filled summer.”
Summer programs
Programs have been relocated to the closest site to their respective schools.
“It’s important for people to know that our capacity to serve hasn’t changed,” said Leighton Cooper, coordinator of MPS’ before- and after-school programs. “We are committed to having safe spaces for young people to attend.”
He said MKE REC staff has planned a fun and safe summer for participants with academic enrichment in the mornings to assist with summer learning loss.

Brian Litzsey, recreation director for MKE REC, said it’s also important to know that programs provide three meals a day for participants and many of the sites provide food to children who aren’t participants.
