Air quality has been at the forefront of national environmental news lately, and not for good reason. Recently, the Environmental Protection Agency has made decisions like announcing it will stop considering the value of human lives saved when setting pollution limits, repealing vehicle emissions standards, and rescinding the Endangerment Finding, which declared greenhouse gases a threat to public health in 2009. With all of these changes happening nationally, now is an important time for communities to start talking about how to protect their air quality locally.
Here in Milwaukee, our community has had its fair share of air quality issues. Milwaukee has been in an Ozone non-attainment zone for many years, though we have been making slow progress at reducing Ozone in our air. Additionally, the past few years have shown that yearly bouts of wildfire smoke may be in our future for some time to come. So what can Milwaukee do to protect our air quality?
One of our Milwaukee communities’ most powerful tools for protecting our air quality is knowledge. Up‑to‑date, neighborhood‑level air quality data is essential for understanding where pollution hits hardest and for empowering residents to advocate for cleaner, healthier air. This is the first step toward enabling Milwaukee citizens to advocate for clean air in our communities. We can’t solve air quality issues in Milwaukee if we don’t know what we are dealing with.
That’s why local air quality organization MKE Freshair Collective seeks to expand its network of air quality sensors across all areas of the Milwaukee community to ensure we, as citizens, know how air pollution affects every Milwaukee neighborhood, especially those that have been known to suffer disproportionately from asthma.
While MKE Freshair Collective is an air quality monitoring organization, at its core, its mission is deeply human. Its reason for existing is to protect Milwaukee’s air quality and the health of Milwaukee citizens, so our children can grow up in a community where they don’t have to worry that the very air they breathe could harm them.
That is why on May 30th, MKE FreshAir Collective would love for you to join us at its second annual Air Quality and Environmental Health Social and Fundraiser, full of opportunities to network and connect with the MKE community, at Kuumba Juice and Coffeehouse. This event will feature the official launch of MKE FreshAir Collectives’ 2025 Air Quality Report, snacks and beverages, and opportunities to win prizes at a silent auction.
Come out and have a good time supporting your local community and MKE FreshAir Collective, so that they can support you and MKE’s fresh air! When we invest in clean air, we invest in each other.
