Milwaukee, WI — The Fiesta Puerto Rico Parade & Festival proudly announces State Representative Sylvia Ortiz-Velez as the Grand Marshal for the 2026 Fiesta Puerto Rico Parade. A dedicated public servant, lifelong advocate, and trailblazing leader, Rep. Ortiz-Velez exemplifies the strength, heritage, and resilient spirit of our community.
The annual Puerto Rican Parade is a vibrant celebration of culture, history, and unity. Each year, the Grand Marshal title honors an individual whose exceptional leadership and unwavering dedication uplift the Latino and Puerto Rican community.
“We are absolutely thrilled to honor Representative Sylvia Ortiz-Velez as this year’s Grand Marshal,” said Jose A. Rodriguez, Executive Director of Fiesta Puerto Rico. “Sylvia’s deep roots in our neighborhood and tireless advocacy in government make her a true champion for our people. Her work on housing, healthcare accessibility, and honoring veterans reflects the best of our values. She doesn’t just represent our community—she fights for it every day.”
Rep. Ortiz-Velez’s journey of service runs deep. Born and raised on Milwaukee’s South Side to Puerto Rican and Mexican parents, she earned a degree in Political Science from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Before her impactful tenure in the State Assembly representing the 8th District, she served on the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors and worked as a real estate broker. Throughout her legislative career, she has championed community safety, affordable healthcare, and the preservation of cultural landmarks. Notably, she has been a leading voice in honoring the rich history and sacrifices of Hispanic and Latino military veterans.
Other elected officials in the parade will be Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson and Milwaukee Sheriff Denita Ball. Also present will be Milwaukee elected officials of Puerto Rican descent, Milwaukee County Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson-Bovell, Milwaukee Common Council President Jose Perez, Judge Ana Berrios-Schroeder, and Judge Pedro Colon.
