Milwaukee (September 4, 2026) – As the first day of school begins to roll across the country, early childhood educator and children’s author Kelly Melton recently released her second book, “Riley’s Big Day at The Itsy Bitsy Scholars”. This picture book is designed to help children ages 0–6 become familiar with what to expect in an early learning environment while encouraging a love of learning and a sense of belonging.
“Riley’s Big Day at The Itsy Bitsy Scholars” follows Riley as she experiences an exciting day at a warm, welcoming early childhood program where curiosity, friendship, and learning come to life. Throughout the day, Riley explores engaging classroom activities, builds meaningful relationships with teachers and classmates, and discovers that every child belongs, is valued, and is capable of learning through play. The story celebrates the joy of early education while introducing young readers to classroom routines, diversity, inclusion, and the confidence that comes from trying new things.
In celebration of the release, Melton will host a book signing and reading-aloud session at the Milwaukee Public Library – Martin Luther King Jr. Branch, located at 2901 N. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive on September 19, 2026, from 3-5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
With over a decade of experience in early childhood education, Melton was inspired by her passion for supporting children and families. “Riley’s First Day at The Itsy Bitsy Scholars” is a resource tool for the entire family.
Melton understands that some children experience separation anxiety when entering a new environment, so her book offers helpful tips encouraging parents to practice short separations, maintain quick, positive goodbyes, and highlight the exciting aspects of school, such as making new friends and learning new things.
“Loving and responsive relationships with caregivers are essential for a child’s development! I want Riley’s Big Day at The Itsy Bitsy Scholars to give both children and parents/guardians a sense of peace before beginning a new educational environment,” Kelly Melton said.
“Riley’s First Day at The Itsy Bitsy Scholars” is also available in Spanish and will be accompanied by activity/coloring books in both English and Spanish.

About Kelly Melton
Kelly Melton is a Milwaukee native, self-published author, early childhood advocate, and trainer passionate about early literacy, representation, and creating spaces where every child feels seen, valued, and included. With a background in early childhood education, community engagement, and cultural foundations, Kelly draws from her lived experience as a former childcare owner and director to create meaningful books, resources, and professional learning experiences for children, families, and educators.
