On Saturday, November 22 at 9 a.m., residents and volunteers will gather in Milwaukee’s Lindsay Heights neighborhood on a corner of N. 11th and W. Chambers Streets to plant about 17 trees across six different sites, including residential properties and vacant lots.
The event is made possible through a grant from the City of Milwaukee’s Urban Forestry Fund and organized by local homeowner Rae Johnson. This resident-led initiative is part of a broader effort to revitalize urban spaces and promote environmental resilience. Trees are more than just beautiful additions to a neighborhood—they provide critical benefits that improve quality of life. Urban trees help reduce air pollution, lower summer temperatures through shade, absorb stormwater runoff, and increase property values. They also support mental health and well-being by creating calming, green environments.
“This is about more than just planting trees,” said Johnson. “It’s about investing in our neighborhood’s future, bringing calm, and beauty to our blocks, creating green spaces for families, and building connections between neighbors and community members.” The event will begin at 9 a.m. with a brief welcome at a corner of 11th and Chambers Streets, followed by tree planting at designated sites throughout the neighborhood. The sites are: 1011 W Chambers St, 1013 W Chambers St, 1102 W Chambers St, 1108 W Chambers St, 2953 N 11th St, and 2814 N. 13th St.
Media are invited to attend and cover the event, speak with organizers and volunteers, and capture the transformation in progress. This event is happening rain or shine. The City of Milwaukee Urban Forestry Fund will provide the trees, watering bags, mulch, shovels, and wheelbarrows. Community members are invited to bring work gloves, and a kind, helpful spirit to our planting day!
