Ribbon Cutting Celebration | Monday, August 3 | 6 p.m.
MILWAUKEE — “Riverwest neighbors transform forgotten neighborhood green space into a native pollinator gathering point honoring the founder of Milwaukee’s park system.”
Neighbors have transformed a small corner of historic Whitnall Knoll into the Whitnall Knoll Gathering Circle—a welcoming community space featuring native pollinator gardens, seating, and public art, celebrating both neighborhood connections and Milwaukee’s natural heritage.
The project was led by Whitnall Knoll residents Susan Hunnicutt and Ebby Szczerbinski and made possible through a Community Connections Small Grant, neighborhood volunteers, and generous support from local businesses.
Named for Charles Whitnall, the “Father of the Milwaukee County Park System,” Whitnall Knoll is where Whitnall was born in 1859. More than a century later, neighbors are honoring that legacy by creating a space that encourages people to gather, learn about native plants and pollinators, and strengthen community connections.
“One of our goals was to create something that belongs to everyone in the neighborhood,” said project co-lead Susan Hunnicutt. “We hope this becomes a place where people stop to visit, children discover pollinators, and neighbors feel inspired to create more habitat and beauty throughout Riverwest.”
The celebration will include:
- Ribbon-cutting ceremony
- Native pollinator garden tours
- Children’s activities and crafts
- Conservation education/Whitnall Knoll history
- Opportunities to meet the project team and neighborhood volunteers
- Coffee and bakery treats from Colectivo
The project was supported by the Community Connections Small Grants Program and local partners including Bliffert Lumber & Hardware, Kellner Greenhouses, Root Down Wisconsin, The Urban Craftsman, Trader Joe’s, and Colectivo Coffee
